She’s a Black Girl Who Rocks!!!!!!!
7 year old Anaya Ellick, who was born with no hands—recently won a national penmanship contest.
The outstanding achievement made by this first-grader at Greenbrier Christian Academy in Chesapeake, Va., was achieved by holding a pencil between her wrists and formulating neat letters.
Anaya is now the recipient of the Nicholas Maxim Special Award for Excellence in Manuscript Penmanship, one of several given out by Zaner-Bloser, an educational company.
“Anaya is a remarkable young lady. She does not let anything get in the way of doing what she has set out to do,” said GCA Principal Tracy Cox in a statement from the school. “She is a hard worker and has some of the best handwriting in her class. Her determination is an inspiration to all of us at GCA.”
According to the contest director, judges were “just stunned” by Anaya’s printing ability. “Her writing sample was comparable to someone who had hands,” she said.
From an early age, Anaya got the message from her family that she could do anything. But it hasn’t been that simple. She is fiercely independent, apt to reject offers for help. In her first few years, she grew frustrated when she wasn’t able to complete a task, according to the Virginia Post.
Anaya’s family continued to preach patience to her. She continued to insist on doing things on her own, thinking situations through and figuring them out.
