Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom Was All About Chadwick Boseman For Me!

No images

Over the Thanksgiving holiday I had the honor of screening Netflix’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom starring Viola Davis and features the last performance from the late Chadwick Boseman.

Ma Rainey's Black Bottom

Chadwick Boseman portrayed Levee Green, a flashy trumpet player who had dreams of starting his own band. But there was more to Levee than that. As the story grows, Levee has been through some stuff in life. He witnessed his mother get raped and killed by a gang of white men, and his father was hung and burned trying to avenge her death.

During an afternoon recording session in Chicago while the band is waiting on Ma Rainey things get heated and all of Levee’s childhood memories come to the forefront as Chadwick gives the performance of his life.

There is a scene where Levee is sharing his anger with God because of the death of his mother. As I watched the scene I couldn’t help but wonder if his battle with cancer was on his mind… That’s just how powerful his performance was. It was like he went somewhere else and took us with him.

Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom starts streaming on Netflix Dec. 18th.

I Finally Cried….My Families Covid-19 Thanksgiving

No images

Whomever would’ve thought that there would be such a phrase or hashtag as COVID-19 Thanksgiving?

COVID-19 Thanksgiving

But here we are……

Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.- 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Because of the pandemic we decided not to travel home to Chicago to celebrate Thanksgiving with the rest of the family. We stayed here in Mississippi, and like most families hopped on zoom, laughed, cried, celebrated birthdays, births, weddings, graduations and Gods healing power.

COVID-19 Thanksgiving

At the beginning of the zoom as I saw my family hop on from all over the world I began to cry… in that moment I realized how much I’ve missed them. How because of COVID-19 I haven’t kissed my grandbaby since March, I haven’t hugged my nieces and nephews, my aunts and uncles, haven’t given my cousins a high five, I haven’t even held hands to pray afraid of getting myself or someone that I love sick. Today I realized the effect Covid-19 has had on my life and I began to cry.

COVID-19 Thanksgiving

For months Ive been following the CDC guidelines because I want to live and I want my family and friends to live, but I am tired.. so I cried today.

COVID-19 Thanksgiving

How did you and your family enjoy Thanksgiving during the pandemic?

Listen: Netflix Voices of Fire Choir “Lift Every Voice & Sing”

The Netflix Voices of Fire choir is celebrating the power of togetherness this Thanksgiving with an uplifting promo spot performing “Lift Every Voice & Sing.”

Netflix Voices of Fire choir

As our nation begins to heal after four years of division and a post election full of voter suppression tactics, I couldn’t think of a better song for a diverse choir to sing that speaks to the times we find ourselves living in.

Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us
Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us
Facing the rising sun of our new day begun
Let us march on ’til victory is won

Voices of Fire is streaming now on Netflix and follows Pharrell Williams’ hometown community as it builds one of the world’s most inspiring gospel choirs. Pharrell’s uncle and a well-respected musical genius in the area, Bishop Ezekiel Williams and his core team of influential gospel leaders will venture out into Hampton Roads to find undiscovered talent. With the belief that diverse backstories can give their collective voice a greater meaning, the Bishop and his team will be searching for people of all ages, ethnicities and backgrounds.

Janet Yellen Poised To Become 1st Woman To Head Treasury Department

No images

President elect Joe Biden announced on Monday that he has chosen Janet Yellen as Sec. of Treasury; if confirmed she will become the 1st woman to hold the position.

Yellen became an economist at a time when you didn’t see a lot of women entering the field and even fewer saw advancement in the male-dominated environment. She is the former chair of the Federal Reserve and made history then as the first woman to hold the position, which she held from 2010-2014.

Recently she has been a champion of continued government support for workers and businesses during the pandemic, publicly warning that a lack of aid to state and local governments could slow recovery.

Janet Yellen

“While the pandemic is still seriously affecting the economy, we need to continue extraordinary fiscal support,” she said in a Bloomberg Television interview in October.

Hey ya’ll Carrie Underwood and John Legend Hallelujah official music video dropped over the weekend and I am loving it!

I’ve been obsessed with the song since I found out that John wrote the song and sent it to Carrie for her Christmas album.

Carrie Underwood and John Legend Hallelujah

“I was deep into making the album, and this one kind of came in. He sent it to us kind of at the end,” the singer recalled on an episode of “Today’s Country Radio With Kelleigh Bannen.”

Carrie Underwood and John Legend Hallelujah

“It was like, ‘Well, I love the song. I feel like this is a puzzle piece I didn’t know was missing. But now that I’ve heard it, I have to have it,’” Underwood shared. “And so we just put the ask back, ‘Thank you for sending, do you want to sing a part with me too?’”

Check out the wintery video below and you can also see John Legend and Carrie Underwood perform the song on HBO Max during her holiday special Dec. 3rd.

David E. Talbert Discuss His Netflix Christmas Musical “Jingle Jangle”

No images

On Friday afternoon my radio show co-host, Rafael and I spoke with David E. Talbert about his bomb new inspirational Netflix Christmas musical Jingle Jangle.

He wrote, produced and directed the film that had Black Twitter excited and full of hope for the first time in a long time.

Everything is Possible!

David E. Talbert

Jingle Jangle stars Forest Whitaker as inventor Jeronicus Jangles. Jeronicus had it going on, he had a loving and supportive wife and daughter who believed in him, and he was the baddest inventor in town.

Then the unthinkable happena. His apprentice stole his book of inventions, and Jeronicus once flourishing life dwindled to nothing. His business had dried up, his wife died and his daughter left. He was in his wilderness season. He lost hope in himself and his gift until his granddaughter Journey Jeronicus came to visit.

Whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right!

David E. Talbert

This is what we couldn’t wait to talk to David about. We wanted to know where he pulled the storyline from, especially the mail lady Ms. Johnston who believed in Jeronicus and encouraged him after he lost it all. During our conversation, Talbert, who grew up in the church compared Jeronicus story to that of Job’s in the Bible. A story of having it all, losing it all and then witnessing God’s restoration power.
