With an announcement saying,”He’s Back!” like MJ did back in the day, Kasim Reed is running to become the ATL’s Mayor again!

Kasim Reed

Atlanta, tell LA, tell New York, tell Charlotte, tell Dallas, tell Chicago and definitely tell Miami, I’m back.

Reed announced his candidacy Thursday night with a birthday fundraiser at the home of singer Tyrese Gibson.

Mayor Reed held the position from  2010-2018. He was Atlanta’s 59th Mayor.

Kasim Reed

Back in 2015, I had the opportunity to visit with the former Mayor’s administration and learn what they were doing around data driven government. I witnessed a leader who operated with a spirit of excellence and required the same of his team.

Keisha Lance Bottoms, Atlanta’s current Mayor, recently announced that she was not running for re-election.

Hillsong Atlanta launched on June 6th and made history while doing so.

Hillsong Atlanta

Sam Collier and his wife Toni Collier are the church’s lead pastors. The first time ever the religious organization has had a Black person lead one of their churches.

Pastor Collier met Hillsong founder Brian Houston during the Black Lives Matter movement.

People were marching in the streets, some rioting, and Collier said Houston told him it was time. Hillsong wanted to be part of changing the narrative and changing the world.

And, Houston said, he wanted Collier to be part of that work, according to Religion News.

Collier grew up in Atlanta, where his dad was a pastor. He got his start in ministry at Ebenezer and New Birth Missionary Baptist Church.

He then moved to North Point Community Church, led by Andy Stanley, before partnering with the Houston’s.

“I needed to see some different things and get exposed to another world, even get a new narrative about another community.”

Bernie Mac Documentary In The Works From John Legend’s Production Company

John Legend’s producing partner Mike Jackson revealed during the Tribeca Festival that they’re working on a Bernie Mac documentary.

Bernie Mac documentary

“We just partnered with Bernie Mac’s estate to cover Bernie Mac’s story,” Jackson shared during the festival.

Calling it a feature film biopic, Jackson stressed that, “It’s about the opportunities to tell a story that you feel are important.”

Gift Lifted has partnered with the late comedian’s estate to make the biopic.

For those of us from Chicago it’s important that his story is told right. For us he was the storyteller of the South Side of Chicago. When he made it, we all felt like we made it. He never became “Hollywood,” it wasn’t in him. Chicago was home up until his death in August 2008. His funeral was held at the church I belonged to, House of Hope on the South Side. Media reports stated that 7,000 people were in attendance. From celebrities to people he knew from the neighborhood. He was loved, still loved and missed. He was Chicago!

I became the storyteller of South Side Chicago.

I remember attending the Kings of Comedy at the United Center in Chicago and feeling the excitement from the audience. Everybody was amp’d about seeing our homeboy who could tell a story that would have you bent over laughing.

Simone Biles Health magazine cover story is all about self care and mental health as she prepares for the upcoming Summer Olympics in Tokyo.

Simone Biles Health Magazine

As she prepares to go for the gold again this summer, Simone told the publication that she’s prioritized self care and her mental health.

“For a while, I saw a psychologist once every two weeks,” she says. “That helped me get in tune with myself so that I felt more comfortable and less anxious.”

Simone’s support system is also solid. Her parents have been with her throughout her entire career and work in the industry, so they really understand the hard work that goes into her success. Then there’s her boyfriend. Simone has been dating Jonathan Owens, a defensive back for the Houston Texans, for about a year. Dating someone who understands the need to keep your body in top shape is helpful. “Since we are both professional athletes, we tend to eat very healthy,” she says. “But I do love to snack. My weakness is cookies or sour candy.”

Every Sunday, Simone takes the day completely off to recharge.

“I really like to relax,” she says with a laugh. “So I’ll hang by the pool with my boyfriend, or have my family come over.”

For her feature, the Olympic Gold medalist is wearing designs from her new partnership with Athleta.

Riley Clemmons Named People Magazine’s “Emerging Artists Of The Summer”

No images

Congratulations are in order for Christian recording artist Riley Clemmons.

Riley Clemmons

The Godsend singer has been named one of People Magazine’s “Emerging Artists of the Summer.”

The publication credits Riley’s ability to combine her Christian upbringing with her love for pop music for making the list.

The 21-year old singer takes inspiration from her  upbringing in church music and combines it with her love for pop to create vulnerable anthems like her debut single “Broken Prayers.”

For new listeners, Clemmons shares that her song “Headspace” from her latest album Godsend is a great introduction into who she is as a growing artist.

“It’s a great song to start on,” Clemmons tells PEOPLE. “It sets the melodic and lyrical tone of the new sense of confidence I found when writing this record and this song in particular. If you’ve ever found yourself giving the space in your head to people and things that are no longer good for you, this song is for you.”

Congratulations Riley, hope to see you at the Dove Awards!

That is the question Jon, a young theater composer is stuck with while he deals with the pressures we all experience when we are called by God to pursue our purpose.

Film synopsis:

Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winner Lin-Manuel Miranda makes his feature directorial debut. The film is an adaptation of the autobiographical musical by Jonathan Larson, who revolutionized theater as the creator of Rent. Days before he’s due to showcase his work in a make-or-break performance, Jon is feeling the pressure from everywhere: from his girlfriend Susan, who dreams of an artistic life beyond New York City; from his friend Michael, who has moved on from his dream to a life of financial security; amidst an artistic community being ravaged by the AIDS epidemic. With the clock ticking, Jon is at a crossroads.

Starring Andrew Garfield, Alexandra Shipp, Robin de Jesús, Joshua Henry, MJ Rodriguez, Bradley Whitford, Tariq Trotter, with Emmy and Tony Award winner Judith Light, and Vanessa Hudgens. The movie premieres on Netflix and select theaters this fall.

The initiative is all about celebrating parents and babies who are helping to change the world.
