From co-directing Beyoncé’s Black Is King, Blitz Bazawule is about to take us back to the south.
It’s been announced that the Ghana born filmmaker is set to direct The Color Purple musical film.
“We, were all blown away by Blitz’s unique vision as a director and look forward to seeing how he brings the next evolution of this beloved story to life,” Oprah told Deadline.
Bazawule is a composer and musician of four studio albums. So, his musical sensibility, and what he could bring to the movie impressed producers Oprah Winfrey, Steven Spielberg, Scott Sanders, and Quincy Jones. The musical will reportedly feature jazz, ragtime, gospel, blues and African rhythms.
The movie is based on The Color Purple Broadway reimagining of Alice Walker’s 1982 novel, which tells the story of African American families and relationships in early twentieth-century Georgia.
