Rep. Elijah Cummings of Baltimore, Maryland has died. He was 68.
Rep. Cummings died early Thursday at Johns Hopkins Hospital due to complications from longstanding health challenges, his congressional office said.
When we’re dancing with the angels, the question will be asked, in 2019, what did we do to make sure we kept our democracy intact? Did we stand on the sidelines and say nothing?”
The son of a former sharecropper, Elijah Cummings was committed to his constituents and the civil rights movement.
The Baltimore archdiocese tweeted that Cummings “generously shared his God-given gifts and talents w/the people of his beloved city, state and nation for so many years. We give thanks for his dedicated service and pray for the repose of his soul.”
He leaves behind his wife and three children.
This is a loss for the country.
