Tyler Perry encouraged us that if they don’t give us a seat at the table, that we should build our own.
Well, building his own has paid off. Forbes has announced that the media mogul has joined the Black Billionaires Club!
“Ownership, changes everything.”
The Madea creator owns the entirety of his creative output, including more than 1,200 episodes of television, 22 feature films and at least two dozen stage plays, as well as a 330-acre studio lot at the edge of Atlanta’s southern limits. He used that control to leverage a deal with ViacomCBS that pays him $150 million a year for new content and gives him an equity stake in BET+, the streaming service it debuted last September. Forbes estimates Perry has earned more than $1.4 billion in pretax income since 2005, which he used to buy homes in Atlanta, New York, Los Angeles and Jackson Hole, Wyoming, as well as two planes.
Today, Forbes estimates his net worth at $1 billion, with a clear path to future membership in The Forbes 400.
Tyler Perry, cast and crew are getting back to work on his hit BET shows “Sistas” this week, with The Oval to follow, according to reports.
The media mogul flew the actors in last week on his private jet, and had them quarantined at his Atlanta studios until production starts.
He had the entire cast and crew tested for COVID-19, with some test expected back on Tuesday.
When Perry announced he was restarting production on his shows, he revealed strict protocol that involves testing and sequestering the shows’ cast and crew on his massive, 330-acre lot of Tyler Perry Studios. Everyone, including Perry, who is directing all episodes, will remain on the lot for the entire duration of each shoot.
If everything goes right with “Sistas,” then “The Oval” will start its season 2 production on July 30th.
Charles Gregory Ross, one of entertainment mogul Tyler Perry crew members has died from coronavirus.
After the news broke, Perry pleaded with the black people to take COVID-19 seriously and to practice social distancing.
Dear Black People,
“Today it’s with a heavy heart that I inform you of the passing of one of our crew members. Mr. Charles Gregory was a hairstylist that had worked with us for many years. The man was warm, loving and hilarious, he wrote on Instagram. We all loved to see him coming and hear his laughter. Charles lost his battle with COVID-19 today. It saddens me to think of him dying this way. My sincerest prayers are with his family.”
“I heard a black person say, “Black people don’t get it.” That is a lie! You can get it, and you will get it if we don’t do what we’re being told to do.”
Actresses Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer also paid tribute to Ross:
“My heart is truly broken to learn that Charles Gregory lost his battle with the corona virus, Spencer wrote. My prayers and thoughts are with his family. #RIPCharlesGregory”
RIP Charles Gregory. He did my hair for the Academy Awards, Lila and Eve and Madea Goes to Jail, Viola wrote. Another loss from the deadly Coronavirus. Rest well. May God’s peace be with your family. You were a jewel.”
Tyler Perry is making his debut on Netflix January 17th with his new thriller, “A Fall From Grace.”
The film stars some seasoned alumni from Perry’s past productions including Have and The Have Nots star, Crystal Fox, Phylicia Rashad, Bresha Webb, Mehcad Brooks, the legendary Cicely Tyson, and Perry.
About the thriller:
Grace Waters (Crystal Fox), a longtime pillar of her Virginia community, stays composed when her ex weds his mistress and her son moves away. With convincing from her best friend Sarah (Phylicia Rashad), she tries putting herself first, and a handsome stranger becomes her surprise, second love. Yet any woman can snap, and Grace’s new husband (Mehcad Brooks) soon ravages her life, her work and many say her sanity. Shuttered in a cell awaiting trial for his murder, Grace’s only hope for vindication lies with Jasmine Bryant (Bresha Webb), a public defender who has never tried a case.
The media mogul wrote, produced and directed the film.
Bishop T.D. Jakes International Leadership Summit has announced media mogul Tyler Perry as the headline speaker for the annual conference happening April 30th thru May 2nd in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Tyler will lead a global think tank session on the power of ownership and creating your own brand. A world-renowned producer, director, actor, screenwriter, playwright, author, songwriter, entrepreneur and philanthropist, Perry is one of the most established artists in Hollywood, known for building his personal brand from the bottom up, attracting millions through his 22 feature films, 20 stage plays, 10 TV shows and New York Times best-selling book. Perry also owns one of the largest studios in the world, the former Fort McPherson army base situated on 330 acres.
According to Jakes, Perry is “shifting the nation and Hollywood. You can beg people for an opportunity, or you can build your own. Perry has seized his opportunity and built his own empire. He is a stellar example that with the right mindset, anyone can overcome daunting obstacles to find success.”
Also scheduled to speak are Pastors, Steven Furtick, John Hannah, and Keion Henderson.

Ain’t no way we were going to get Tyler Perry, Oprah Winfrey and Bishop Jakes in the same place and not have some church….
To cap off his history making weekend, Tyler Perry had some church during Sunday Brunch on the lawn of his very own…history making, brand new, state of the art movie studio in Atlanta… The brunches theme was “Glory to Glory.”
“Glory to Glory – Couldn’t close the weekend without Jesus meeting us on the lawn at the studio!! Having a full heart and a thankful soul to all that have prayed me all the way here,” Tyler wrote on Instagram.
This is how you make sure that Jesus is glorified, you bring in Bishop Jakes to bring the message, and you top it off with music from Shirley Caesar, the Clark Sisters, Yolanda Adams, and Smokie Norful.
I can’t get enough of the way Tasha Page and Rhonda Chambers blessed the folks with a rendition of “Speak Lord” from The Color Purple, Lady O’s reaction says it all.
Check it out:
The Hate You Give author, Angie Thomas attended the brunch with her mother.
Also in attendance were Will and Jada Smith, Ava DuVernay, Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton, Halle Berry, Spike Lee, Whoopi Goldberg, Tamron Hall, Viola Davis, all 3 members of Destiny’s Child, Diddy, and a long list of others.
We will close with an inspiring message from Mr. Perry:
On Tuesday, Oct. 1st the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce honored Tyler Perry with his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
In attendance to help honor Perry were, Haves & The Have Nots star Crystal Fox, Kerry Washington, Idris Elba and other cast members from his hit shows/movies.
During his acceptance speech, Perry shared how the star represents light in darkness.
“As I sit here I think about what a star is. A star being light for so many people. A star you can always see, even in darkness. So, for all those people whose dreams may be on life support, I want you to walk pass this star in particular and know that I’ve been there. That I’ve been struggling, I’ve been out, broke, homeless, I’ve been through all of those things, but there was a perseverance, a tremendous faith in God, a tremendous hope that allowed me to keep going.”
