HBO has released the official trailer for Yvonne Orji’s Momma I Made It comedy special.
The Insecure star gets a packed Howard Theatre rolling with laughter as she brings her razor-sharp wit and confidence to the stage in her first HBO comedy special. Both celebrating and poking fun at her strict, formative Nigerian-American upbringing, Yvonne speaks to her unique journey from pre-med to comedy.
The comedy special premieres June 7th on the cable network and stream it on HBO Max.
Yvonne Orji comedy show “Lagos to Laurel” has been selling out everywhere and now the actress/comedian is getting her own HBO comedy special.
Yvonne will shoot the hour-long special in front of a live audience at Howard University this month, to honor her mom, who was a nurse at the HBCU for 27 years. . It looks like Orji’s Nigerian heritage will also be a central point during the show, as the special will also include footage shot in Lagos, Nigeria.
She shared the news on Instagram, highlighting what she called a “full circle moment” in her career:
“Before ever stepping on a stage to tell my first joke, my only point of reference for comedy was sneaking into my parents bedroom (they had a cable box—remember those) to watch Def Comedy Jam on HBO,” she wrote. “CUT TO: years later… I’m gonna have my very first comedy special air on @hbo! DC, PG, I’m coming home, FEB 29th to tape TWO SOLD OUT SHOWS at the Howard Theater to honor my mom, who was a nurse at HU for 27 years.”
The actress/comedian will star opposite Lil Rel and John Cena in the upcoming comedy film”Vacation Friends” from 20th Century Fox and Hulu.
According to Deadline, the film follows a straight-laced couple that has fun with a rowdy couple on vacation in Mexico. When they return to the States, they discover that the crazy couple they met in Mexico followed them back home. Orji will play Emily Conway, a corporate type on the unwind who comes from a corporate and buttoned-up family.
The actress is is also gearing up for the release of her first novel, Bamboozled by Jesus: How God Tricked Me Into the Life of My Dreams (and 20 Lessons I Learned Along the Way), which will be published under Flatiron Books
